Ikea Expedit Question
Hi again,

I hope that someone in this community has the Ikea Expedit and can advise.

We are buying one this weekend that I plan to use as a room divider of sorts and I was wondering how wobbly they are. We don't have kids but we do have cat that I'd rather not have flattened (she is skinny enough as is)  Yes I will post pics when I'm done as we'll be doing a lot of re-arranging and such.  Also if my evil plans come to fruition we'lll finally have our Malm dressers and I can get the bedroom in decent enough shape for pictures of that too

As Always; Thank you all in advance:)

Slowly going  from Freecycle Chic to IKEA Geek

P.S. Is there ANY sofas from IKEA that are actually comfortable?? I love the look of the Ektorp but its not comfy at all

my friends' have an Ektorp and they love it. I think it's super comfortable, too.

As for the expedit, they have one of those, also, but it's against a wall. I can ask her later if I remember. I think b/c it's as least 12" deep, it should be relatively stable.

Thank you:) I really wanted to love the Ektorp..so did hubby but we both tried it and it didnt have that sink in cozy up with a good book feel. Maybe it needs to be "broken in" :( I need to find a decently priced sofa so we can get rid of futon. Something I know I can get up here in Canada:)

omg, I think the ektorp is totally sink in with a good book comfy! But I also think the bigger it is, the more comfy it is. The big back cushions are really what makes it great. Maybe the best would be find a friend or an acquaintance who has one and make them let you watch a movie on it!

We see if we can try it again when we got to Ikea this weekend. Unfort we dont know anyone that has the sofa here in Alberta.

If I had the $$ I'd special order a sofa from Ballards but I can imagine the Freight Costs to Alberta. Well if I had the $$ I guess it wouldn't matter..lol

Thanks again:)

I have a red Ektorp ... it's quite comfortable! I've even had to sleep on it a few times when my bedroom had ... animal issues. Totally sleepable.

My husband slept on ours for the last month of my pregnancy. He was almost reluctant to come back to a real bed because he was so comfortable on it.

I just bough the Vreta 2-seater and LOVE it. Having said that, I just lounged about on the in-store one ... the one I bought is still wrapped in plastic and propped up sideways in my mother's living room, so not sure to what extent it'll need to be broken in.

I also bought the Expedit (4x4) and am planning to use it as a divider. I also have a toddler. Pretty sure they come with brackets to secure them to the wall. I'm setting it all up next Friday, if that's not too far away I can update you on how it all goes?
A New Healthy Me!zen_girl on July 11th, 2008 06:53 am (UTC)
That would be great and thanks..I'm not sure if we'd get it put together this weekend anyways because I need to clear space in the living room to do so..lol. The one we're getting is also the 4x4 one too:)
Will check out the Vreta too. I love Ikea:)

My suggestion is to check out this Monroe collection from Home Reserve. It has a similar style to the Ektorp with the arm shape and such, so it is fairly close there. Cheaper than the Ikea version, even.

I have thoroughly researched and this stuff seems to be fan-freaking-tastic for the budget and the features. It holds 2000 lbs. There is the super thick foam on the seats that is apparently SUPER butt-friendly. There is storage under the seat of EVERY piece. Most of the fabrics can come off to go right into the washing machine and you can put it back on the sofa pieces WHILE THEY ARE STILL DAMP. You order different fabric to change up the style. It literally just comes apart when you want to move it around or whatever. Frankly, I'd make sweet love to it, if I could.

The *ONLY* downside is that you need to look at each of the fabrics on it to decide what you feel fits it best. Because it is a puzzle-style that you put together, I think some of the fabrics accentuate in a bad way the lines across the bottom and the arms. You will see what I mean in the sample color they show on the page when you first load it. Not hot.

I will be getting it in most likely this fabric:

<a href=&quot;http://www.homereserve.com/store/furniture.cfm?StyleID=3&PrototypeID=12&TypeID=1&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;>Monroe collection</a>

The fabric pattern makes me happy inside and helps keep your eye from going to the bit below the cushions that bothers me most on the light-colored fabric examples.

I'd even possibly consider Avenue or Tuxedo with that print.

Anyway, yeah. This is something I am obviously a bit nuts over, so I apologize for my "OMG LOOK!" rambling. Decorating does this to me... ;)

Thanks for the information but I don't imagine they ship to Canada:( Love your sofa choice though
Bethanygrrrrrrrrrrrowl on July 11th, 2008 10:40 am (UTC)
Actually, it says their UPS shipping is within the US but it doesn't say they only ship to the US. Worth a shot to email and ask, I think.

wow. i am totally bookmarking this for when i finally move to a 2-bedroom and can replace my futon with a couch!

have you seen one in person yet?
Bethanygrrrrrrrrrrrowl on July 11th, 2008 10:42 am (UTC)
I am glad to be able to share my find. I am in LOVE with this stuff.

No, sadly. I've scoured the web for 32842374 pictures people have posted of their stuff from the site, including the building process and I am loving what I'm seeing. I saw one handy tip from one person to walk around on the foam before you put it on the couch to ease it up a bit or just wiggle around on it before or after you put it on.
Bethanygrrrrrrrrrrrowl on July 11th, 2008 11:27 pm (UTC)
Sidenote: I was lusting on the site again today and they rolled out a new site with five additional styles of furniture and a load of new fabric choices and wall art and new pillows and cubes and blah blah. Work going to take a peek. Heh.

I have an Ektorp and I love it!

And my EXPEDIT bookcase has survived four major moves.

We have the Karlstad sofa and we LOVE it! It is so comfortable and quite roomy even though it looks small and sleek. My boyfriend (who's 6'3) and I curl up on it together all the time and we neve feel cramped.
A New Healthy Me!zen_girl on July 11th, 2008 04:26 pm (UTC)
Hi again and thanks everyone:)

I know most are saying the the Ektorp is comfy but again, we didn't find it so and maybe it was because it was a store model we're not sure but i do know my hubby will not buy it so we need alternatives. I will check out the others recommended though.

Because my husband is very particular also it has to be a sofa we can actually sit on and try and not mail order with the chance we'd have to return. He was very explicit on that this morning. So even any Ballards Sofa dream is out sadly...lol

Also thank for the info on the Expedit, I'm getting very excited to pick it up tomorrow!!

Take Care,

P.S. I guess I should also add that since we're trying to live more Green and Natural we're hopefully set on IKEA as we love their sustainability message and the recyclebility of their products. If there are any Green alternatives that are accessible in Canada I'd love those links too:)

I have a Kramfors loveseat+chaise combo and it's super comfy. I didn't care for the Ektorp myself either.
A New Healthy Me!zen_girl on July 11th, 2008 04:45 pm (UTC)
Thanks!! that sofa and exact combo is on my list to look at this weekend:)

We have that bookcase, but it is against a wall. It is very sturdy as long as it is put together properly. I'd just recommend using common sense (not making it too top-heavy). I think it's a great product for the price.
s0inlovewithyous0inlovewithyou on July 11th, 2008 05:26 pm (UTC)
hey i have the Expedit and it comes with things to fix it to the wall, i would say if you're putting it on carpet i would be a little weary of it falling. i put mine up against a wall and decided not to use it as a divider. on a wood floor though i definitely would.
A New Healthy Me!zen_girl on July 11th, 2008 05:33 pm (UTC)
Thanks,,we do have carpet..the really low berber type but mayb we'll use one of those safety things for one end and see if that works. i'm mostly worried about the kitty jumping on it and running through the openings and toppling it down...
Annaseren_wen on July 11th, 2008 07:01 pm (UTC)
I find the Expedit is quite sturdy, if you're worried just attach it to the walls. And I completely agree about the Ektorp, I've always loved it then went to see it in the store, it's so stiff and uncomfortable, I was really disappointed.
Janetladyjane083 on July 12th, 2008 04:43 pm (UTC)
I would never buy a Ikea sofa. Maybe if they were 75% of the price they charge, but there is no way I would spend that money on an uncomfortable couch. Almost everything else (except my mattress) in my home is from ikea.

I wanted a 2 seater sofa bed in a light color. The Ektop one is $649. I got one at a store called Klausner Home in mircofiber. Much comfier. Same price.
WhiteWulfewhitewulfe on July 12th, 2008 11:05 pm (UTC)
The TYLOSAND sofas seem to be fairly comfortable...

As for the Expedit, I use one of the 4x2's as a djing console/booth thingy, and it's quite stable... My 4x4 shelf isn't too too bad for stability.

Either way, the expedit series does come with wall brackets...
